At the time this litter was bred I was basically starting over and figuring out which direction I was going. I wanted to work with Burmese, but had also always had a love for mink, and was somewhat interested in Russian blue. Tomoko's father was a Burmese and her mother was a Russian blue, so I had the possibility of getting both colors dependin gon who she was bred to. Mink was also in her background so I may have accomplished that goal as well. Overall her type was decent. She had a long head, but good size for a female, decent ears for a dumbo, and a thick, round tail. Her temperament was wonderful. I chose a male I hoped would help improve her head while also maintaining the rest of her good traits. I did not expect much color in the litter, other than black and possibly Russian blue. At the time I was not aware of the health in these rats' backgrounds, other than "pretty good". I knew and met Tomoko's parents and grandparents. On the day Tomoko gave birth, she had seven babies. Unfortunately only two babies were born alive, and only one survived the first night. Within days after the birth Tomoko's milk supply started drying up. The single surviving baby was fostered into Aiko's litter, which was born on the same day only hours earlier. Tomoko had shown no signs of illness, had good weight, and had no issues during birth, so the loss of so many babies was a mystery to me. I decided to pet-place the one surviving baby, rather than add him to my breeding program. I made this decision to help prevent passing on whatever issue Tomoko had that resulted in such a poor litter.
